Day of Action

Each year on June 21st – the longest day of the year – United Ways across the country United Way Day of Actionparticipate in a nationwide Day of Action. With more daylight hours than any other, June 21st is the perfect day to let your actions speak louder than words. It's the perfect way to show, by example, what it means to LIVE UNITED.

As a national volunteer day, Day of Action provides an opportunity for United Way to declare our intention to improve lives in measurable and lasting ways by mobilizing the caring power of thousands of people in each community.

Here are some more ideas about ways you can get involved on June 21st – or any day of the year!

  • Clean up a local community park.
  • Host a garage sale and donate the proceeds.
  • Sign up to be a story time reader at your local library.
  • Babysit for a single mother.
  • Drive an elderly neighbor to doctor's appointments or to run errands.
  • Visit someone who just lost a loved one.
  • Grocery shop for someone who can't.
  • Clean up the yard of a neighbor in need.
  • Bring your gently used clothes to the Salvation Army or local donation bin.
  • Double a recipe and deliver a meal.
  • Bring canned goods to a local soup kitchen or food pantry.
  • Coach a youth summer team.
  • Volunteer at a summer camp.
  • Donate gently used sports equipment to a family shelter.
  • Register people to vote.
  • Advocate for a cause that you believe in.

Are you looking for ways that your business can get more involved in the community?  Here are some ideas:

  • Adopt an agency: Non-profit agencies and organizations work hard to keep their overhead costs low, so why not help them accomplish their work by donating your time, talent, and/or supplies.
  • Donate office supplies, packs of light bulbs (energy-efficient ones, of course!), or paper that is only used on one-side.
  • Allow your maintenance/grounds person to take calls from your "adopted" agency for small maintenance jobs.
  • If you have in-house printing capabilities, offer to print brochures or advertisements for your "adopted" agency.
  • Donate media space for your "adopted" agency to advertise their services to the public.
