After Living in This Country for Over Three Years, "Damaris" Began Working with Her Tutor

After Living in This Country for Over Three Years, "Damaris" Began Working with Her Tutor
"Damaris" began working with her tutor in October 2005, after living in this country for over three years.  In her native country, she received a Master's Degree, but because of her low proficiency in English, she "had to work mechanically, as a machine" cleaning houses.  Slowly, she improved her English, and was able to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree through the Puerta al Tutoro program at Fairleigh Dickinson University.  Still, she felt limited by her lack of English speaking skills, and came to English as a Second Language program for help.  Since she began with her tutor, she has learned to order food in restaurants and speak with her doctor with confidence.  She is writing for an English-language magazine, and is working as a volunteer translator, helping people prepare their taxes.

The English as a Second Language Program at Literacy Volunteers for Morris County is helping people like Damaris achieve their goals every day, and is supported by United Way.
