What We Do
Our staff and volunteers work to maintain and increase opportunities for seniors and people with disabilities to live healthy, secure, independent and meaningful lives for as long as possible.  Further, we are committed to improving the lives of caregivers, those who do so much for family, friends, or neighbors.

Progress Report

  • United Way programs have led to more seniors and people with disabilities living independently, with dignity and financial security.
  • Affordable housing for those living with mental illness has been supported by United Way of Morris County.  Current efforts will create over 100 new housing units over the next five years.
  • County seniors received help signing up for the Medicare D Prescription Drug Program, when the Caregivers Coalition joined with Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation to offer two, free information session on new plans.
  • Caregivers throughout the County are joining voices together to advocate for caregivers and to highlight caregiving issues to the public:
  • The Caregivers Coalition partners with the Morris County Office on Aging and the Alzheimer's Association to presentan annual, full day, information-packed Caregiver Workshop. Over 100 caregivers in Morris County attended the most recent conference, which represents a 100% increase in attendance over the previous year's conference.
  • The Caregivers Coalition "Lunch and Learn" series, targeted to organizations and the workplace, includes 11 programs led by professional caregiving consultants and educators who volunteer their time to highlight caregiving issues and solutions.
  • The Caregivers Coalition has joined an advocacy effort to support the Lifespan Respite Care Act, a bill introduced in Congress (HR 3248, S 1283) that would authorize competitive grants to states to make quality respite available and accessible to family caregivers, regardless of age or disability.

Goals & Priorities
Goals

  • Seniors will maintain a healthy, secure, independent, and stimulating lifestyle as long as possible with access to a continuum of services.
  • People with disabilities will have opportunities to overcome barriers to participation in home, school, work, or community activities.
  • People who have chronic mental illnesses will have an opportunity for a meaningful life.
  • Family caregivers of seniors and people with disabilities will have the support needed to reduce the stress associated with this responsibility.

Priorities
Increasing opportunities for seniors and people with disabilities to lead independent and enriching the lives.  A wealth of services provided by United Way and its partners help make this happen, including information/referral services, counseling programs, socialization opportunities, in-home services (such as home health aides, chore and home repair programs, financial assistance), legal services, and job training and education services.  Community education and awareness programs aimed at increasing understanding, acceptance, and support among Morris County residents are also an important component.

Supporting, empowering, and advocating for caregivers.  United Way is particularly concerned with strengthening services and resources to a rapidly growing population of caregivers in Morris County.  Improving access to information regarding caregiving and available services, as well as advocating for policies and legislation to improve the quality of life for caregivers are also important.  The Caregivers Coalition is one way we're making this happen.  Supplying respite for overstressed and overworked caregivers is another.

Providing accessible and affordable transportation for seniors and people with disabilities.  Affordable and accessible transportation has been a long-standing problem in Morris County.  Transportation is needed to access critical health and human services, get to social and recreational activities that are essential to helping people reduce isolation; and get to jobs and job training.  United Way is working to increase public awareness of the impact of transportation limitations on peoples' lives, and is seeking to collaborate with any and all partners to identify and implement proven programs that improve our community's transportation "crunch."

United Way Supported Community Collaborations
Caregivers Coalition of Morris County

With the rapidly growing population of seniors and caregivers in our community, United Way is focused on supporting, empowering, and advocating for caregivers in Morris County.  We formed the Caregivers Coalition of Morris County to strengthen services and resources to caregivers, to improve access to information on caregiving and available services, and to advocate for policies and legislation to improve the quality of life for caregivers.

Caregivers are found in every town around the county, caring for loved ones of all ages with chronic illnesses or disabilities.  Family, friends, or neighbors may care for an aging parent, a sibling with mental illness, or a child or spouse with a disability.

Do the issues of caregiving concern you?  Are you a caregiver?  We encourage you to learn more about the Caregivers Coalition and help us continue to make caregiver issues a priority in our community.
