What We Do
Nearly 50% of all Americans suffer from a least one chronic illness, yet healthcare is becoming more and more difficult for low-income families to afford. Low-income families, victims of abuse, and people struggling with mental illness or substance abuse all share one thing in common – all need access to competent, responsive, and compassionate care so that they can lead safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
United Way and its partners help provide emergency health care, preventive care, case management, crisis counseling, and other services which are essential in shaping healthy, strong communities, including response in time of crisis.

Priorities
United Way is helping provide preventive care that builds healthy communities.
Health screenings, prevention information, outreach, and workshops help our community members lead healthier lives through education and by preventing problems from happening in the first place. Programs focus on preventing child abuse and neglect, and on dating abuse prevention, preventing high school students from becoming either perpetrators or victims of abuse through education. Other medical and dental programs ensure that children in need receive required dental and hearing screenings.
Emergency care for people in need is critical.
The most vulnerable of uninsured families often have difficulty obtaining urgently needed medications to treat acute illnesses or minimize complications of pregnancy. In response, United Way of Morris County supports programs that ensure that pregnant women receive the prenatal care and medications that they desperately need to assist in the development of a healthy baby, and that make sure that acutely ill children and teens without health insurance get medications they urgently need. Other programs help connect people in crisis with mental health practitioners who provide immediate counseling and psychotherapy. Additional programs offer a variety of clinical and case management services for individuals, couples, and families who are in crisis.
Our residents need access to routine health care and wellness programs.
Access to services remains a critical stumbling block for our residents. 2-1-1 First Call for Help stands as the starting place for anyone looking for health care; 2-1-1 provides comprehensive information and referral services to hundreds of callers each month. United Way of Morris County supports programs that help with access to health care by planning and providing much needed transportation services for seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income residents, so they can better access medical offices and health care facilities.

United Way Supported Community Collaborations
Caregivers Coalition of Morris County
With the rapidly growing population of seniors and caregivers in our community, United Way is focused on supporting, empowering, and advocating for caregivers in Morris County. We formed the Caregivers Coalition of Morris County to strengthen services and resources to caregivers, to improve access to information on caregiving and available services, and to advocate for policies and legislation to improve the quality of life for caregivers.
Caregivers are found in every town around the county, caring for loved ones of all ages with chronic illnesses or disabilities. Family, friends, or neighbors may care for an aging parent, a sibling with mental illness, or a child or spouse with a disability.
Do the issues of caregiving concern you? Are you a caregiver? We encourage you to learn more about the Caregivers Coalition and help us continue to make caregiver issues a priority in our community.
