Fostering Self-Sufficiency
Housing Alliance :: Facts
The Housing Alliance is a coalition of twelve member and fifteen affiliate organizations committed to providing a broad spectrum of housing opportunities in Morris County. The non-profit, public, and private organizations that participate in the Alliance work together to increase the supply of affordable housing in Morris County.
Alliance participants, speaking with "one voice," provide and advocate for the creation of affordable housing opportunities for all Morris County residents, but in particular, single heads of households, young adults, seniors, people with disabilities and even households making less than the median income of $83,583 as they struggle to find or sustain their housing.
Affordable housing is defined as housing that costs no more than 30% of a household's annual income. In Morris County, nearly one out of three homeowners and renters currently pays more than that, which means they are "housing-cost" burdened. A 2004 study by United Way of Morris County shows a shortfall of more than 10,000 affordable housing units in Morris County.
Housing Alliance priorities include:
- Spreading the message that Morris County needs housing for all.
- Showcasing housing that is both attractive and affordable.
- Increasing public knowledge of the housing crisis.
- Influencing political policy.
Alliance members have developed an educational PowerPoint presentation that outlines the housing situation in Morris County and suggests creative ways of addressing it. A presentation of this information can be arranged. Email Michelle Roers DiNapoli for more information.
Currently, funding is provided by the members of the Alliance. United Way of Morris County provides matching funds. Ongoing support from other organizations such as banks, foundations, etc. is welcomed.
