Youth Volunteers Collect Diapers for Children on the Green
February 28, 2007 – Morristown, NJ – A group of high school students made an unusual delivery to Children on the Green on February 26th; they dropped off almost 1,500 diapers to the local child care center. The students, who are involved with United Way of Morris County's Youth Leadership and Service Council, spent the past month conducting a Diaper Drive for Children on the Green, collecting boxes and bags of diapers from their friends, family and community members.
The students chose to donate their collection to Children on the Green because the center serves many children from homeless families. At the sight of the towering boxes of diapers that the students delivered, Rochelle Kelman, executive director of Children on the Green said, "Thank you so much. You have done a great thing for the families we serve with your efforts. We all appreciate it so much."
The Diaper Drive is just one of the volunteer projects that Youth Council members have accomplished this school year. In October, they volunteered for the "Trick or Suites" event at Embassy Suites for children from P.G. Chambers School. The group also organized a holiday party for homeless families, as well as a clean up project at Eric Johnson House. Youth Council members are now gearing up for a fundraiser "bowl-a-thon" this spring, which will benefit United Way of Morris County.
