Janice Huff, WNBC Meteorologist and Host of Wednesday’s Child, headlines upcoming luncheon for United Way
United Way of Morris County’s Women’s Leadership Council announces support for The Youth Empowerment Initiative

October 29, 2007 – Randolph, NJ – On Wednesday, November 7, 2007, the Women's Leadership Council (WLC) of United Way of Morris County will welcome Janice Huff as the keynote speaker at their Fall Luncheon.  The WLC will use this event to officially announce the focus for their fundraising efforts and advocacy.  The WLC has elected to support the work of the Youth Empowerment Initiative (YEI)an initiative of United Way of Morris County aimed to improve the health and well-being of middle school aged children.   By joining the YEI in addressing these concerns facing adolescents, the WLC can utilize their resources to help address serious issues facing these kids in an effort to increase the safety and decrease the chances that Morris County middle school youth will engage in risk behaviors.

As a passionate advocate for children and community-related issues, Janice Huff will kick off the event and set the tone for the conversation around the importance of improving the well-being of today's youth.  Huff has received numerous accolades for her work on "Wednesday's Child." She has also received several awards for her work with children, including: the Administration for Children's Services' "2004 Golden Heart Award," the 2004 "Miracle Makers Media Award" for her commitment and dedication to helping New York City's Foster Care children and the Second Annual "Nicholas Scoppetta Award for Service to Children."

Approximately 100 women from corporations, small businesses, non-profits, and the community-at-large are expected to attend to hear Huff's remarks, and learn about the groundbreaking work with middle school children in Morris County done by the Youth Empowerment Initiative.

The Fall Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 from 11:30am to 1:30pm at the Meadow Wood Manor, 461 Route 10 East, Randolph, NJ.  Tickets are $35.  Pre-registration is required.

To attend the luncheon, or for more information, please email Kate Anthony at United Way of Morris County, or phone 973.993.1160, x108.

About the Women's Leadership Council
Women's Leadership Council, a committee of United Way, taps into the power, talent, and passion of women leaders to transform our communities.  Its mission is to improve people's lives by mobilizing the caring power of women in our communities.  The WLC hosts a variety of events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds for some of the most pressing issues facing girls, women and families today.  To find out more about the Women's Leadership Council, email Amanda Boyadjis, or phone 973.993.1160, x152.

About the Youth Empowerment Initiative
The Youth Empowerment Initiative is an outgrowth of the Youth Empowerment Alliance which through the collaborative efforts of United Way of Morris County and local school districts, revealed serious issues and concerns that face middle school students throughout Morris County.  United Way of Morris County conducted this detailed survey and numerous focus groups with students in a safe and confidential environment so as to elicit the students' thoughts and feelings about these tough issues.

Through programs and partnerships with groups throughout the community including the Women's Leadership Council, the Youth Empowerment Initiative aims to make significant strides in addressing the issues and challenges that were revealed in their study by 2010.  Specific areas of focus include:

  • Providing increased safety in schools and community environments
  • Encouraging a climate of positive peer pressure
  • Increasing access to counselors and advocates
  • Instructing kids to be strong self-advocates
  • Providing opportunities for mentoring
