STORM CORPS
Alternative Spring Break 2006
February 6, 2006 – Morristown, NJ – Are you cut out for the corps? United Way and MTV have teamed together to launch STORM CORPS, an alternative spring break program designed to inspire young people to volunteer to help rebuild communities devastated by the 2005 hurricane season.
For the week of March 11-17, 2006 United Way and MTV STORM CORPS are sending 100 young leaders to Biloxi, Miss. and Foley, Ala. during the traditional "spring break" time period to experience community building efforts first-hand. STORM CORPS members will work in teams to muck mud, clean up child care centers, tear down moldy walls, and rebuild roofs - whatever it takes to help the people of the Gulf Coast rebuild their homes, their communities, and their lives.
Of the estimated 171,000 homes on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, 65,000 are destroyed, 38,000 have major damage, 51,000 have minor damage, and only 1,300 homes are unaffected. Most of the historical buildings and landmarks in Biloxi, Miss. were totally destroyed, along with many businesses. Some residents have left the area and will not come back, but others are working to rebuild.
STORM CORPS, sponsored by FedEx Corporation and the Home Depot Foundation, is accepting applications from young leaders over the age of 18. Applications are due February 20, 2006. For more information about STORM CORPS, other volunteer opportunities, and a program application, visit www.unitedway.org or www.mtv.com.
