Project Homecoming Thanks Soldiers and Their Families

April 23, 2005 – Morristown, NJ – At a "Project Homecoming" celebration at the Morristown Armory on Saturday, April 23rd, over 400 family members, friends and supporters welcomed home members of the 3rd Battalion, 112th Field Artillery, New Jersey Army National Guard. The troops had returned in February after a year's deployment in Iraq.

The crowd cheered and waved American flags as battalion commander, Lt. Col. Robert Schofield, welcomed each soldier and addressed the crowd.  Also welcoming the soldiers home were Mayor John "Jay" Delaney, Jr. (Morristown) and Mayor Scott Rosenbush (Township of Morris.)

A casual, festive party followed, with dinner, raffles for R&R weekends at local luxury hotels, dancing and activities for the children.

Project Homecoming was spearheaded by United Way of Morris County, with American Red Cross Northwest New Jersey and Family Service of Morris County along with the Family Readiness Groups from the Armory.

A special Basket of Thanks, brimming with items donated by Morris County businesses and organizations, was presented to each soldier.

The Morris Area Girl Scouts created 300 spectacular "Welcome Home" posters and 70 red, white and blue centerpieces for the event.  Volunteers from Intel, Weichert Relocation, and AAA New Jersey Automobile Club, with United Way of Morris County, worked for two days to transform the cavernous Armory into a festive party hall.
