"Game of Life" in Wharton Gives Teens Real Life Advice
Morris County Child Abuse Prevention Collaboration hosts unique event to involve teens at Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School
September 26, 2006 – Wharton, NJ – In cooperation with United Way of Morris County, the Morris County Child Abuse Prevention Collaboration is hosting the "Game of Life" on Thursday, September 28 at the Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School, 137 Central Avenue, Wharton, NJ from 9:00am – 11:00am. This unique program is designed to spark awareness among teenagers about the various social issues that exist, as well as the agencies and programs in their local community that are in place to help address those problems.
During the "Game of Life," middle school students are given a description of a problem related to a variety of issues, including domestic violence, substance abuse, pregnancy, eating disorders, gambling, and depression. Each student has one class period to solve or address the problem by visiting and learning from the various service providers represented at the school that day. The Game of Life gives teenagers the opportunity to increase their problem solving skills and receive invaluable information about the issue, their town, community, and County resources.
Participating service providers in the upcoming "Game of Life" event include 2-1-1 First Call for Help, the Wharton Police Department, Planned Parenthood, Morris County Organization for Hispanic Affairs, St. Hubert's, Child and Family Resources, the Division of Youth and Family Services, Family Service of Morris County, Hope House, Jersey Battered Women's Service, Morris County Prosecutor's Office, St. Clare's Center for the Protection of Children, Sexual Assault Center, United Way of Morris County, the Zufall Clinic, and personnel from the Middle School in Wharton.
The "Game of Life" will run from 9:00am – 11:00am at the Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School in Wharton. For more information, please contact Alexis Diaz at 973.631.5060 or Kathy Kwasnik at 973.993.1160, x130.
