Representative Rodney P. Frelinghuysen Honored for
Affordable Housing Efforts

August 16, 2006 – Morris Plains, NJ – On August 14, 2006, Rep. Frelinghuysen received NeighborWorks America's Government Service Award for his leadership in expanding the affordable housing supply for low-and moderate-income families in Morris County.  Frelinghuysen was honored at a ceremony during the NeighborWorks® Training Institute in Washington, D.C.  NeighborWorks America is a national organization which provides financial support, technical assistance, and training to non-profit and community organizations.

Congressman Frelinghuysen was nominated for this award by the Housing Partnership of Morris County, a non-profit organization which provides resources and training to individuals and municipalities to plan for and meet their affordable housing needs.  Congressman Frelinghuysen's collaboration with the Housing Partnership of Morris County has resulted in several co-sponsored informational sessions for perspective home buyers.  He was also instrumental in bringing NeighborWorks America and its expertise to Morris County.

Congressman Frelinghuysen has a long record of supporting affordable housing.  Before serving in Congress, he worked locally on the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders and, in large part, is responsible for the establishment of the Morris County Housing Authority.  He has also worked tirelessly advocating for legislation that established group homes for citizens with special needs.  Most recently, he supported legislation that will raise the limits on single-family mortgages insured by the FHA; making home ownership from many families a reality.  He also supported the establishment of Community Hope's program for homeless veterans at the Veterans Administration's Lyons, New Jersey campus.

"Representative Frelinghuysen understands the far-reaching impact that safe, affordable housing has on children, individuals, families, and the economy.  We encourage him to continue to advocate for legislation and, most importantly, to ensure funding is available to expand the supply of affordable housing," said John Franklin, CEO of United Way of Morris County.  United Way is a founding member of a local housing initiative, the Housing Alliance.
