"Game of Life" Will Spark Social Awareness Among MacKinnon Middle School Students
United Way of Morris County, Deirdre’s House, and Morris County Child Abuse Prevention Collaboration offer real life problem solving sessions for students
February 1, 2008 – Wharton, NJ – United Way of Morris County in cooperation with the Morris County Child Abuse Prevention Collaboration (CAPC) and Deirdre’s House will be hosting the “Game Of Life” on Friday, Feb 8th at the MacKinnon Middle School in Wharton from 8:00am-12:30pm. This unique program is designed to introduce middle school students to the many agencies and programs within their local community that are in place to address the problems, concerns, and issues that they may face. 100 students from MacKinnon Middle School are expected to participate in Friday's program.
During the "Game of Life," middle school students are given a description of a real life problem related to domestic violence, substance abuse, pregnancy, an eating disorder, or depression. Each student has one class period to solve or address the problem by visiting and learning from the various service providers represented at the school that day. The Game of Life gives these middle school students the opportunity to apply problem solving skills to help them address specific issues. It also provides invaluable information about the services and resources available to them through their school, town, and the larger community.
Participating service providers in the upcoming "Game of Life" event include: DYFS, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Utterly Global, Jersey Battered Women’s Service, Teen Health FX, Family Service of Morris County, Morris County Sexual Assault Center, United Way of Morris County, Morris County Prevention is Key, Wharton school district personnel, Wharton Municipal Alliance, First Call for Help, Family Intervention and the Wharton Police Department.
This is the third school year that the very successful and sought after middle school version of the Game of Life will be conducted. For more information, please contact Judy Rawla at 973.631.5060 or Liz Warner at United Way of Morris County: 973.993.1160 x107.
