Local Teens Raise $3,000 for United Way of Morris County
May 25, 2007 – Morristown, NJ – A group of 13 local high school students raised over $3,000 for United Way at a bowl-a-thon event on Thursday, May 24, 2007 at Rockaway Lanes in Rockaway. More than 50 community members attended the event.
The fundraiser was the brainchild of local high school students who volunteer their time with United Way's Youth Leadership and Service Council, which is sponsored by the F.M. Kirby Foundation, MetLife Community Ventures Program, and State Farm Insurance Companies. The Council is a student-led volunteer group of United Way that gives young people the opportunity to learn about social issues and become involved in community service.
Youth Council members were responsible for planning the fundraiser in its entirety, from selling tickets to securing in-kind donations. Kristen Warms, former coordinator for the Youth Council at United Way said, "It has been such a pleasure to work with this group of young people over the past year; their dedication to the community, and their enthusiasm for all the work that they do is just amazing."
A highlight of the event was a presentation by Youth Council members about their experience over the past year. About her involvement, Lindsay Wohning, a student at West Morris Central High School, said "I like being a part of the Youth Council because I am aware of problems going on in Morris County and have the opportunity to help people in need."
The event was generously sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Millea Bros., Ltd., and Rockaway Lanes. In-kind donations were provided by: Bliss Clothing Store; Cascata, the Spa; C'est Cheese; Chatham Sports Shop; The Community Theatre; Commerce Bank; Compass Fitness; Ice Milan Gelateria; Let's Dance Again; Marina n'Style Salon; NewBridge Services; Pine Street Shops; The Office; Running Company; SmartWorld Coffee; Trend Motors; West Side Diner; Laura Baisch; and Brian Schnedeker.
