Local Marina Keeps United Way in Mind, Despite Pressure at the Pump
Family-owned marina keeps up tradition of donating part of fuel profits to United Way

May 24, 2006 – Lake Hopatcong, NJ – For the second year in a row, the Fernandez family, which owns and operates Bridge Marina on Lake Hopatcong, NJ, is kicking off the summer boating season by donating a portion of its Memorial Day weekend profits to United Way of Morris County.  From Friday, May 26 – Monday, May 29, Bridge Marina will donate two cents of every gallon of gas it sells to United Way.

The local small business held similar charity events for United Way last year, raising over $200 for the organization.   The Memorial Day fundraiser will again donate a portion of the marina's fuel profits to United Way, even though gas prices are averaging an all-time high across New Jersey.

Bridge Marina was started in 1957 by Carmen and Salustiano Fernandez, who emigrated from Spain.  Joseph R. Fernandez was the second generation to run the business, and he recently turned the reigns over to his son, Ray Fernandez.

About the family's decision to hold another charity event for United Way, Ray Fernandez said, "Bridge Marina and its customers are certainly pressured by the rising cost of fuel, but even in light of this we still firmly believe it is important to support our local community.  This is why we are committed to helping United Way with its community building efforts."

Bridge Marina will present a check to United Way shortly after the holiday weekend.
