Women's Leadership Council's Day of Caring and Flagpole Dedication
April 3, 2004
The Women's Leadership Council of United Way of Morris County held a Day of Caring and flagpole dedication on Saturday, April 3, at Head Start in Dover.
The Day of Caring — a day of hands-on volunteer work at a United Way member agency — began at 9:30am and concluded at 12:30pm, with the dedication of a new flagpole on the grounds of Head Start, attended by Dover Mayor Javier Marin. The flagpole was made possible by generous contributions from the Women's Leadership Council, in conjunction with Mayor Marin, whose municipal officers were in charge of installing the pole.
Head Start offers a free, comprehensive pre-school program to children from low income families; United Way funds an extended day childcare program there to parents who work, are incapacitated, or participate in job training activities.
In the morning, Women's Leadership Council volunteers performing tasks including:
- Putting library cards and pockets in books.
- Updating computerized Volunteer Luncheon invitee lists.
- Stuffing Volunteer Luncheon invitations.
- Preparing graduation certificates.
- Making labels for library shelves.
In addition to the participants from Women's Leadership Council, volunteers at Head Start included teens from Escucha, who performed some of the more physical activities, including outdoor clean-up.
