UWMC Golf 06 GroupGolfers Hit the Links to Help Children in Crisis
Monday, July 10, 2006

Over 115 ambitious golf enthusiasts raised much-needed funds to help children in crisis at United Way of Morris County's Seventh Annual Golf Invitational at Trump National Golf Club on Monday, July 10, 2006.

This year's event gave participants the opportunity to play the relatively new Trump course, which is ranked 47th in the nation. Reviews were enthusiastic, although most of the golfers agreed the course was "tough," and that it "played much longer" than its official (and already long!) 6,700 yard.UWMC Golf 06 picture 1

The event raised funds for United Way supported programs that help Morris County children cope with a personal or family crisis, including shelter services for children living on the streets, counseling to prevent dating violence, safe haven for child victims of abuse, and compassionate medical exams and counseling for victims of sexual abuse.

Sponsors supporting the Children in Crisis golf event included: Asurion; PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC; Sharp Electronics; Schindler Elevator Corporation; The Ace Group; and Turner Construction. A special thanks to the Intel crew for their continued support as well.

An Odyssey Pontoon boat valued at almost $36,000 was provided by Ray Fernandez, owner of Bridge Marina, Inc. in Lake Hopatcong. The pleasure boat graced the pond on the 10th hole, and was the Grand Prize for anyone lucky enough to shoot a hole in one. Unfortunately, that shot was elusive to the end, and many balls decided instead to take a swim. Kudos though, to Joe Longo, whose tee shot landed a scant three feet from the hole. Oh, so close!

UWMC Golf 06 picture 2The event fielded it greatest number in women golfer this year, with a total of 12 playing the competitive course.

UWMC Golf 06 picture 3Dave Albright, Co-Chair of the event, spoke at dinner: "The United Way golf outing is always a great day, but it is made even better knowing we are playing on behalf of children who need help."

John Franklin, CEO of United Way of Morris County, thanked the golfers on behalf of Morris County’s children in crisis.  He cited those children who are helped OUT of crisis by United Way: those who find themselves helped off the streets, counseled after sexual abuse, kept productive and out of gangs, provided with quality child care despite living below the poverty line.  “United Way programs are helping these kids, and all the players at this event are helping, too.  We hope to see you all next year!”

Awards were given to the following winners: Low Gross at four over Par: John Rowe, a guest of Pfizer Global Pharmaceutical. Low Gross Team: Bank of America with Mike Moreland, Scott Anderson, Gary Krause, and Joe Maione. Low Net Team: Intel - Cavallo Team with Aaron Cook, Christian Parker-Lentz, Steven Mase, and Jeff Johnson. Closest to the Pin on Hole #4: Jeff Birnbaum, from Morgan Stanley. Longest Drive on Hole #12: Bob Moran, from The Ace Group.

UWMC Golf 06 picture 4The event used the EGolfScore system, which provided players with wireless scoring on hand-held devices, and a real-time leader board. Check out a recap of scores, winners of our contets, and more pictures from the day at EGolfScore.
