Carol DeGraw, MSW, LCSW, community impact manager of the "Help for People in Crisis" Impact Area, addressed participants during the evening reception, and thanked them for their support. Her remarks follow:
"Golf is a lot like life. You need skill, a strategy, and a bit of luck as you negotiate the challenges – I believe golfers call them the bunkers and hazards. We all come to the game with different levels of skill and different strategies. Sometimes it works. And sometimes – even with a great deal of skill and the best strategy – it doesn't. The wind changes, a storm begins, an event happens that changes the outcome you were hoping for.
The Help for People in Crisis Action Team directs its efforts toward helping people who are at that critical point. It doesn't matter how they got there. Perhaps they didn't plan so well, or they never had the opportunity to learn a skill they needed, or perhaps their luck didn't hold. Maybe it was one catastrophic event or a series of life events. What matters is that help is there when it is needed: A safe haven for victims of domestic violence. A shelter for individuals and families who are homeless. Food for those who are hungry. Support for those who are in emotional pain or traumatized.
I have been told that the Chinese translation of the word crisis is opportunity. Today, you have provided people in crisis with an opportunity to receive the services they need to move beyond the crisis in their lives toward a safe, healthy and fulfilling life. For that, each and every one of you have scored a hole in one today. Thank you for your generosity."
