Hot Golfers Raise Funds to
Help People in Crisis

Monday, July 18, 2005

The extreme heat, humidity, and professional grade tournament conditions didn't stop over 130 ambitious golf enthusiasts on Monday, July 18, 2005 for United Way's Sixth Annual Golf Event at Baltusrol.  This year's event, which was fully subscribed, gave participants the opportunity to play the course just weeks before the 87th PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in August.

Bob Moran of the Ace Group, who has played in the event for the past four years, said, "The United Way golf outing at Baltusrol was a great day as usual. This year, it was a test of endurance to some extent, given the sweltering weather conditions and the toughness of the course, but it was still a very enjoyable day. It was great to get a first hand experience of conditions approaching what the pros will be facing in a few weeks. I am sure all who participated are eager to see how the pros handle this course set up."

United Way also hosted a silent auction, which featured sports memorabilia ranging from Chad Pennington's replica Jersey to a United Way of Morris County 2005 golf group2signed photo of the 1980 USA Hockey Team.

United Way of Morris County thanks this year's corporate sponsors: Atlantic Health System; Bearing Point; Commerce Bank; Dell; Discovery Networks; First Morris Bank and Trust; Intel; JCP&L; lock/line, LLC; Pfizer Inc; PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC; Sharp Electronics; Schindler Elevator Corporation; Structure Tone; The Ace Group; United Way of Morris County 2005 golf daveToyota Motor Sales USA Inc.; Turner Construction; and Wyeth.  Their generosity helped United Way raise funds for the "Help for People in Crisis" Impact Area, which focuses on helping Morris County residents meet their basic needs in times of emergency or catastrophe.

Carol DeGraw, MSW, LCSW, community impact manager of the "Help for People in Crisis" Impact Area, addressed participants during the evening reception, and thanked them for their support.  Her remarks follow:

United Way of Morris County Golf 2005 Carol"Golf is a lot like life.  You need skill, a strategy, and a bit of luck as you negotiate the challenges – I believe golfers call them the bunkers and hazards.  We all come to the game with different levels of skill and different strategies.  Sometimes it works.  And sometimes – even with a great deal of skill and the best strategy – it doesn't.  The wind changes, a storm begins, an event happens that changes the outcome you were hoping for.

The Help for People in Crisis Action Team directs its efforts toward helping people who are at that critical point.  It doesn't matter how they got there.  Perhaps they didn't plan so well, or they never had the opportunity to learn a skill they needed, or perhaps their luck didn't hold.  Maybe it was one catastrophic event or a series of life events.  What matters is that help is there when it is needed:  A safe haven for victims of domestic violence.  A shelter for individuals and families who are homeless.  Food for those who are hungry.  Support for those who are in emotional pain or traumatized.

United Way of Morris County Golf 2005 DinnerI have been told that the Chinese translation of the word crisis is opportunity.  Today, you have provided people in crisis with an opportunity to receive the services they need to move beyond the crisis in their lives toward a safe, healthy and fulfilling life.  For that, each and every one of you have scored a hole in one today.   Thank you for your generosity."
