The Mentor Training Center’s 10th Birthday & Annual Recognition Evening
Wednesday, May 7, 2008

The cake and the balloons tipped everyone off; this was going to be a special evening!

mentoring_1The Mentor Training Center, created by United Way of Morris County in 1998, celebrated its 10th birthday at the annual Mentor Recognition Evening on May 7, 2008.  Held at the beautifully renovated Morris Museum, the evening had a family feel, as young and old enjoyed exhibits, little ones danced around the cake, and a rousing version of “Happy Birthday” closed the show.

JoAnn Tsonton, the Center’s manager since its inception, received a standing ovation from the almost 90 attendees in mentoring_2honor of her efforts over the last ten years … conducting more than 112 training classes, and graduating over 1,300 mentors!

Master of Ceremonies, Gary Hrynoweski, Executive Director of Inverse, Inc., thanked United Way of Morris County for underwriting ten years of mentor training.  He then acknowledged some very dedicated volunteers on the Center’s Steering Committee: Barbara Ward, Kay Birkholt, Patrick Fennell, and Angela Katz.

The dynamic Ms. Arlene
Lester, Philanthropy and Community Relations Specialist for State Farm, was the event’s keynote speaker.  A passionate supporter of mentoring in both the corporate and public arenas, she riveted the crowd with stories of mentors who changed her life.

JoAnn Tsonton then took the podium, saying, “This evening really isn’t about the Center, or about me…it’s all about you.  Those of you who make time in your lives to mentor others.  We are here to say ‘thank you’ to each and every one of YOU!”

JoAnn honored some very dedicated individuals who volunteer in mentoring programs in a range of capacities.  Honorees were nominated by Morris County agencies and businesses that are involved with mentoring programs.  Together, mentor and nominating sponsor stood for applause.  Honorees included: Susan Beavis, Leslie Contreras, Derrick Knighton, Patrick Leonard, William Lovett, Kurt Lerke, Patty Marchaterre, Jackie Mullins, and Deana O’Donnell.  Congratulations, all!

Door prizes were donated by Trader Joe's of Florham Park, the Morris Museum, and the Bickford Theater.  Thank you!!
