Keeping Our Children Safe: Empowering Communities to
Recognize
& Prevent Child Sexual Abuse
Thursday, March 29, 2007
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. On March 29th, the Morris County Child Abuse Prevention Collaboration provided a day of training for all those entrusted with the protection and care of children. Almost 100 social workers, mental health professionals, law enforcement agents and others gained tips and information to increase their ability to identify the signs and symptoms of child abuse; prevention techniques were also covered.
The Morris County Child Abuse Prevention Collaboration consists of membership from a variety of organizations including United Way, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, Child and Family Resources, Deirdre’s House, Division of Youth & Family Services, Family Service of Morris County, First Call for Help, Jersey Battered Women’s Service, Inc., and the Morris County Sexual Assault Center. The Collaboration focuses on increasing awareness about child abuse matters and encourages prevention efforts throughout the county.
The Keeping our Children Safe program featured Jeanne Scala, MA, LPC, who discussed the dynamics of child sexual abuse; as well as Janet Rosenzweig, who focused on community responsibility and empowerment in the prevention of child sexual abuse. Morris County Assistant prosecutors, Melanie Smith and Meg Rodriguez addressed legal and reporting issues.
