Meeting Highlights the Power of Changing Lives
Volunteers honored for efforts on behalf of United Way mission

“Changing Lives, One at a Time,” was the theme of United Way's Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held October 10 at the Hamilton Park Hotel. Over 250 United Way supporters from corporations, schools, non-profit 2007 Kellogg Awardorganizations, and the community-at-large gathered to kick-off United Way’s annual campaign and to recognize many who volunteer in Morris County.

John Franklin, CEO of United Way of Morris County, honored retiring members of the Board of Directors, which included Kevin Rigby, Kevin Gillen, Dr. Thomas Kane, Barbara Loughran, and Carol Novrit. Kira Mendez was also recognized for her extraordinary contributions as Chair of the Board of Directors. David Green, Deloitte & Touche, and newly elected Board Chair, moderated the luncheon.

United Way of Morris County 2007 Annual Meeting Patrick FennelSpeakers included Patrick Fennell, founder and president of Empowerment Solutions, who spoke about the power of mentoring to change a young life.  His mentor training is based on an ABCD formula, which teaches young people to be accountable, to make better choices, and then to follow their destiny.

John, Loi, Shaunna RubinShaunna Rubin, a junior at Fairleigh Dickinson University, described her experiences volunteering with United Way’s Alternative Spring Break program rebuilding in the Gulf Coast Region, noting "there comes a time in life where there is a moment that you stand still and know this is exactly where you want to be.";

Carmela SlivinskiCarmela Slivinski, Executive Director of DAWN, Center for Independent Living, and a well-known advocate for people with disabilities, shared her story of caregiving for her mother and her daughter.  "None of us make a conscious decision to become caregivers...but caregiving defines you.  It is who you are, " she said.

JoAnn Quattro was honored with United Way's Gold Award, the George Baldwin Youth Volunteer Award went to Katie Mateicka, and 2007 Partnerships Awards recognized Tina O’Brien McCarthy of FedEx, Ray Fernandez, Bridge Marina, Inc., and members of the Steering Committee of United Way of Morris County’s Commercial Real Estate Network.

Sarah MatsushimaThe event culminated with the presentation of the Kellogg Award to Wyeth, a long-standing corporate partner in United Way's mission of improving lives and strengthening communities. 

Elaine Thornberry, from PricewaterhouseCoopers, presented the honor, noting that "Wyeth is a powerful partner in United Way’s mission." The award was accepted by Sharon Prince, Assistant Vice President for Philanthropy & Corporate Communications at Wyeth, who said that Wyeth was proud to "share this honor with an incredible group of corporations from Morris County."

The opening entertainment was provided by Sarah Matsushima, a 6th grader from the Morristown area, who delighted the crowd with a lovely version of "Over the Rainbow."
