Code of Ethics

1. Personal and Professional Integrity
A personal commitment to integrity in all circumstances benefits each individual as well as the organization. United Way of Morris County employees and volunteers:

  • Strive to meet the highest standards of performance, quality, service and achievement in working towards the United Way of Morris County mission.
  • Communicate honestly and openly to avoid misrepresentation.
  • Promote a working environment where honesty, open communication, mutual respect and minority opinions are valued.
  • Exhibit respect and fairness toward all those with whom we come into contact.
2. Accountability
United Way of Morris County is responsible to its stakeholders and recipients of services, which include member agencies and organizations, donors, collaborators and others who have placed faith in United Way of Morris County. To uphold this trust we:

  • Promote good stewardship of United Way of Morris County resources that are used to pay operating expenses, salaries, and employee benefits and refrain from allowing expenditures that by nature do not directly advance United Way of Morris County's mission.
  • Make full and fair disclosure of all relevant information to our donors
  • Ensure accuracy of record keeping.
  • Ensure an annual independent audit is performed.
  • Comply with all laws and regulations affecting the organization.
  • Review pertinent information of member agencies to ensure that donor funds are going to operationally sound organizations.
3. Solicitations and Voluntary Giving
The most responsive contributors are those who have the opportunity to become informed and involved. Fund raising is always conducted in a voluntary manner.

United Way of Morris County refrains from any use of coercion in fundraising activities. We promote voluntary giving in dealing with donors and vendors by building awareness and providing opportunities for engagement.

Volunteers:

  • Treat all volunteers with fairness, equity and respect, providing appropriate mechanisms for their views and interests to be expressed.
  • Involve volunteers at appropriate levels and phases of the decision-making process.
  • Assist in the development and the understanding of the roles of volunteers and employees and appropriately recognize their contributions.

Vendors:

  • Afford vendors the opportunity to offer or qualify their products or services on a competitive basis.
  • Conduct all competitive bidding in a fair and professional manner, giving no special preferences or advantages to any vendor.
4. Diversity and Equal Opportunity

5. Conflict of Interest
Our reputation for integrity is our most valuable asset and it is determined by the conduct of each staff and volunteer member.

Staff:

  • It is a most basic policy of United Way of Morris County that no employee will be involved in any activity which presents a conflict, or appearance of conflict, with responsible job performance and maintaining the highest level of public trust necessary for United Way of Morris County to carry out its mission.
  • Refrain from participating in or influencing any decision or other action of United Way of Morris County or any organization related to it that could result in a direct or indirect benefit to his or her family or to any other organization with which the employee is materially affiliated.

Volunteer:

  • Should not knowingly take any action, or make any statement, intended to unduly influence the conduct of United Way of Morris County in such a way to confer any financial benefit on themselves, their immediate family members or any organization in which they or their immediate family members have a significant interest as stakeholders, directors or officers.
  • Should disclose all known conflicts or potential conflicts of interest in any matter before the Board of Directors, if they are Board members, or any committee upon which they serve. They should withdraw from the meeting room during any discussion, review and voting in connection with such matter.

6. Confidentiality and Privacy
Confidentiality is a hallmark of professionalism. United Way of Morris County employees and volunteers:

  • Ensure that all information which is confidential or privileged or which is not publicly available is not disclosed inappropriately.
  • Ensure that all non-public information of other persons or firms acquired by United Way of Morris County personnel in dealing with outside firms on behalf of United Way of Morris County is treated as confidential and not disclosed.
